At our Tambopata Ecolodge, we don’t offer adventure activities that would disturb the delicate balance of rainforest life. Instead, we invite our guests to experience the unmatched biological diversity of the forests we help to protect simply by immersing themselves in nature. Accompanied by our experienced and knowledgeable naturalist guides, travelers can relax and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime rainforest ecoadventure.
By staying at our eco-lodge, our guests make a real contribution to our sustainable ecotourism-based conservation efforts, helping us to continue protecting pristine rainforest habitats and the wildlife for which they are home.
Among the many eco-friendly activities we offer our guests are jungle night walks. Under the dense foliage of the rainforest, darkness falls fast. And as the sun goes down, many of the rainforest’s most iconic species begin to stir. It is because so many rainforest species are nocturnal that a nighttime jungle walk is such a rewarding experience. Often, the best chance to see –or hear- certain animals, including several large mammals, is to venture out after the sun has gone down.
In the rainforest at night, smaller creatures are also particularly active. It is after nightfall when many species of tree frogs and fascinating insect species are particularly active. A nighttime walk in the jungle is a unique experience that travelers should not miss. There is nothing quite like exploring a forest trail with a flashlight in your hand, and watching how the Amazon forest is transformed from a daytime to a nighttime world.
At Tambopata Ecolodge, we maintain 37 kilometers (23 miles) of forest trails, where we invite our guests to experience and learn more about the varied flora and fauna of the Amazon basin. Walking a section of this trail system at night, accompanied by a local expert who really knows and understands the forest, is an opportunity to immerse oneself fully in the natural world.
It is natural to experience some nervousness when one walks for the first time in the nighttime forest. But as soon as your eyes begin to adjust to the growing darkness, you will appreciate how the rainforest is filled with life after dark. While some animals sleep after sundown, others become more active, and this is the best time to see, hear and sense the presence of a host of creatures that only come out at night. In the rainforest, the night air fills with the sounds of insects, birds and mammals.
The nocturnal fauna of the Amazon rainforest is composed of many animals. These include insects, reptiles and amphibians, as well as mammals. And so, during a night walk, or one of our nighttime boat excursions on the river, we encourage our guests to look out for creatures large and small. These can range from stick insects, poison dart frogs and tarantulas, to night monkeys, the world’s only nocturnal monkeys. So remember, if you only see the rainforest during the day, you’ll only experience part of its unique magic. Join us at Tambopata Ecolodge for a jungle night walk!
