Accessed from the jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, in southeastern Peru, Tambopata National Reserve is one of Peru’s most important protected natural areas, and one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots. Its proximity to Puerto Maldonado, which can be reached via regular flights from Lima and Cusco, or even by comfortable night bus from Cusco, makes it the most accessible unspoiled rainforest destination in South America.
The Tambopata rainforest is the habitat of hundreds of species of flora and fauna: more than 600 species of birds, 1200 species of butterflies, over 100 amphibians, at least 200 species of fish, an estimated 169 mammal species and more than 100 kinds of reptiles have been observed and recorded within the borders of the National Reserve.
Covering around 300,000 hectares, Tambopata National Reserve offers endless opportunities for wildlife observation and exploration of remote corners of the Amazon jungle. Major attractions easily accessed from our own Tambopata Ecolodge during guided excursions include picturesque lakes, such as Lake Sachavacayoc, and the most unique attractions we offer within Tambopata National Reserve are its clay licks, where several species of macaws, parrots and parakeets gather.
Tambopata National Reserve is the closest area of protected primary forest to the jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, so the first stage of your Peru vacation jungle trip, will be a flight or bus to this remote town. Once you’ve reached the local airport or bus station, our Tambopata Ecolodge team will take care of every detail. We meet all our guests, before making a stop at our office in town and heading to the river port in our own vehicle, for the boat ride into the rainforest to our jungle lodge.
From Puerto Maldonado, it takes between two and three hours to reach our eco-lodge, where our protected Private Conservation Area borders the forests of Tambopata National Reserve. There are other lodges and hotels located closer to the town of Puerto Maldonado, but these tend to be situated in secondary forest, disturbed by human activity, where rainforest flora has been negatively affected and there are fewer animals. This means that, by taking the time to travel the 68 kilometers to our eco-lodge, you will be ensuring that you experience unspoiled Amazon rainforest habitat.
