It can be hard to know how to plan an Amazon rainforest trip, from knowing the best time of year to visit the jungle, to choosing the best place in South America to explore the rainforest, and who to trust to guide you in one of the world’s last great wilderness areas.
We built our Tambopata Ecolodge in 1991 to offer travelers the best opportunities to see Amazon wildlife and immerse themselves in the lush flora of the rainforest. Today, our own Tambopata Private Conservation Area and our responsible tourism policy enjoy the official recognition of the Peruvian government.
At Tambopata, we offer something other jungle lodge destinations cannot offer: accessibility for travelers with limited time to spend in the rainforest. As part of a 10-day or 2-week Peru vacation, travelers can visit us in our jungle home, combined with their Cusco tours and Machu Picchu visit.
When deciding on the best way to visit the rainforest anywhere in South America, it is important to remember that, although the Amazon basin remains the most pristine tropical forest on Earth, its matchless variety of life forms inhabits dense forest. This means that visitors should not expect the wildlife density of the African savannah: major species of Amazon fauna can be difficult to spot, meaning that time, patience, luck and guides like ours -with expert local knowledge- are needed to enjoy the experience of spotting a jaguar in its natural habitat!
In fact, who will be guiding you during your ecotourism excursions on rainforest trail walks and river and lake boat trips is probably the most important aspect to consider when planning a jungle trip. An experienced naturalist guide like the local experts we work with at our Tambopata Ecolodge will know where to look for certain species, such as birds, primates, reptiles or other major fauna, including felines. He or she will be able to help you identify the wonderful species of animals that fly, jump, slither, swim or run to avoid your presence in the forest, as well as explain to you the marvels of Amazon rainforest plant life, in all its incomparable complexity and beauty!
