Tourists who decide to travel to Puerto Maldonado and visit the Tambopata National Reserve can expect to experience pristine, protected Amazon rainforest wilderness areas. The Madre de Dios region, where the National Reserve and our own Tambopata Ecolodge Private Conservation Area are located, is known in Peru as the country’s biodiversity capital, because its protected forests harbor abundant wildlife. Typical species of Amazon fauna flourish because the health of the forest itself is maintained through conservation initiatives like our own.
In Tambopata, travelers can connect with nature by walking through the forest in the company of expert naturalist guides, listening to the sounds of the Amazon, and looking out for its inhabitants. And because visitors to the rainforests of Tambopata are supporting ecotourism and conservation initiatives like our own, they can be sure that they’re making a positive impact on the Peruvian Amazon with their presence.
The city of Puerto Maldonado is situated in southeastern Peru. It is the capital of Peru’s Madre de Dios region, which borders Brazil and Bolivia. As the starting point for ecotourism trips into the rainforest, it can be accessed from Cusco or Lima via scheduled flights. Our own Tambopata Ecolodge is located 68 kilometers from the city. This means that, unlike many other lodges in the region, we are situated in undisturbed forest, bordering the biodiverse Tambopata National Reserve where we operate our all-inclusive sustainable ecotourism packages.
Our comfortable Tambopata Ecolodge is designed for those travelers who want to venture deep into the forests of the Amazon basin during the day, and in the evenings enjoy good food and an exotic cocktail in our dining room, bar and lounge. While we drive our guests from the airport to the river port along a jungle road, our remote lodge is actually only accessible by river. The fact that no road leads directly to our eco-lodge means that the rainforest ecosystems surrounding our privileged location are completely undisturbed by outside human activity. In fact, ours is such a peaceful location, it serves as a refuge for the troops of monkeys that can often be seen moving through the trees directly above our lodge buildings.
And aside from comfort, location is the most important consideration when choosing an Amazon eco-lodge vacation experience. In undisturbed rainforest like the area we help to protect, you will have a higher chance of seeing extraordinary wildlife, including several species of monkey, caimans, an incredible variety of birdlife, including macaws and parrots at Tambopata’s unique clay licks, and even jaguars, which have been thriving in our forests in recent years!
