Here in Peru, more than 30 years ago, we built our Tambopata Ecolodge on the banks of the Tambopata River, to conserve the Amazon rainforest and offer travelers from all of the world the opportunity to enjoy a jungle trip in an area of forest which to this day remains unspoiled.
Our eco-lodge and Private Conservation Area are situated on the edge of Tambopata National Reserve, where we guide our guests during their rainforest excursions. Here, the weather is humid and hot during most of the year. Of course, it can rain at any time in our tropical forests; however, we do experience two distinct seasons: the rainy season (the wettest months of which tend to be January and February) and the dry season (which runs from May to October). For the travelers who come to stay with us at our jungle lodge, there are advantages to visiting at any time of the year.
The rainy season, which begins in November and continues into early April, offers excellent opportunities for seeing certain species of typical Amazon wildlife. For example, because most trees tend to produce fruit during the rainiest months, this is a great time to see monkeys and many bird species. Temperatures tend to be slightly cooler in the rainier months, and although jungle trails can be muddy, higher water levels mean better opportunities to spot animals such as caimans and giant otters, on rivers and lakes.
In the dry season, which usually runs from May to October, forest trails are less muddy and this makes it easier to get around the rainforest on foot. Parrots and macaws can be seen at clay licks on clear days, and other animals, such as jaguars, can be spotted on riverside beaches, as they emerge from the drier forest conditions to drink or hunt.
So, whatever the time of year you choose for your Peru vacation, be sure to set aside a few days after you’ve seen Cusco and Machu Picchu, or hiked the Inca Trail, and come and visit the Amazon rainforest, with our comfortable eco-lodge as your base!
