From our Tambopata Ecolodge main office in the jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, after picking up our guests from the airport or bus station, we take them in our own vehicle to the river port, where they board one of our boats for the journey along the Tambopata River to our eco-lodge.
This trip takes around three hours, because we are situated in primary, unspoiled protected rainforest approximately 68 kilometers (43 miles) from Puerto Maldonado, well beyond those areas of forest that surround the town and which have been affected by human activity.
The river journey to our jungle home on the edge of Tambopata National Reserve is a great opportunity to relax while looking out for caimans, turtles and birds along the way, or peering into the trees of the forested riverbanks, with the help of one of our naturalist guides, on the look-out for monkeys and other Amazon fauna. This is a wonderful start to our guests’ Amazon adventure.
From the Tambopata River, a walkway leads from our jetty to the Ecolodge, where our guests are met by staff, helped to settle in to their cabin-style rooms, and given an introductory briefing. Our eco-lodge is made from materials that ensure the exteriors of all the buildings harmonize with the surrounding forest, inspired in the traditional wood and palm-thatch design for rainforest homes.
At the same time, the interiors are made from modern materials, to ensure that our guests are comfortable during their time with us. Rooms are light and airy, with screens rather than windows, for better ventilation. This means that the sounds of the rainforest are not shut out, and the Amazon’s fauna can be heard at all times by our guests, particularly at night, when hundreds of nocturnal species are active.
Because we are situated deep in the forests of Tambopata, it is even possible to see fauna, including the monkeys that move in troops through the treetops, as well as many bird species, without even leaving the lodge facilities.
We built our eco-lodge at this privileged location in 1991, five years before our giant neighbor, Tambopata National Reserve, was granted reserve status by the Peruvian government. It is the remoteness of our Ecolodge that makes us such a special ecotourism destination, where guests can expect to see abundant Amazon fauna and flora, guided during excursions by our professional team. At Tambopata Ecolodge, we ensure that our guests experience nature in its purest form, while benefiting from our warm hospitality and the good food and comfort we provide.
