Tips for those who plan to travel to the Amazon rainforest

27 January 2025 (324 visits)

Location: Tambopata National Reserve and our Tambopata Ecolodge are set in a remote location. To get to the jungle that is our home, you can book flights from Lima or Cusco, or take a bus from Cusco, to the town of Puerto Maldonado, where our eco-lodge team meet all our guests.

Climate and clothing: The climate in Tambopata is warm and humid throughout the year. Temperatures range from 17°C to 39°C. To protect yourself from the sun and insects, you should pack light clothing, including long trousers and long sleeves. Remember to pack high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat or cap, and sturdy shoes for jungle trips. It can rain at any time, so a rain jacket or poncho is also essential.

Vaccinations and health: As with all tropical rainforest destinations, yellow fever vaccinations are recommended for visiting Tambopata. We also recommend that you bring with you a reliable, good-quality insect repellent to protect against mosquitos and other insects. You should check with your physician or local health clinic before departure, to see if you need any other vaccinations.

Access to Tambopata National Reserve: It is important to remember that access is only permitted to Tambopata National Reserve through an authorized tour operator. Our Tambopata Ecolodge is located on the edge of the Reserve, and we form an important part of the protective buffer zone around the Reserve. Our guided excursions are led by experienced professional naturalist guides with expert local knowledge, within the protected primary rainforest of the Reserve. If you plan to travel during the high season (June to August), be sure to book your jungle tour in advance, to avoid disappointment.

Costs and entrance fees: In addition to the cost of the all-inclusive rainforest tour packages that we offer, you will also need to pay a small per-person entrance fee to visit the Reserve. At our office in Puerto Maldonado, our team will help you to make this payment, which goes directly to the National Reserve authorities and is used for the upkeep of the Reserve.

What your rainforest visit means

In Peru ecotourism has helped make it possible to create national reserves and save the forests of the Amazon basin from destruction. By implementing our ecotourism-based conservation model (see our video), we are ensuring the forests will be around for future generations to appreciate. Pioneering projects like Tambopata Ecolodge, which was established in 1991, serve as a conservation model, by showing how responsible ecotourism can support conservation initiatives.
