Visiting Tambopata National Reserve

Few people visit the most remote parts of the Amazon basin. And if you ask those who have, many will say that they have visited Iquitos, in northeastern Peru. Iquitos is certainly among the most popular Amazon jungle destinations in South America. But, today mass tourism, coupled with the growing urban population of the city of Iquitos itself, can make it more difficult than ever to find an “authentic” Amazon experience starting in Iquitos. Instead of searching unspoiled jungle for wildlife, many travelers can find themselves at lodges in disturbed, secondary forest where few animals continue to live, or at so-called “traditional” indigenous ceremonies, staged for their benefit.
But happily, in Peru there are other options for visiting the Amazon and perhaps the very best is Tambopata National Reserve, which borders our own Private Conservation Area, and is the setting for our guided trips into the rainforest.
Tambopata offers a much more low-key and authentic Amazon jungle trip for travelers who want to see the rainforest after their visit to Cusco and Machu Picchu.
