What is the difference between a hotel and an eco-lodge?

Eco-lodges are becoming a favorite destination for travelers looking for ecotourism options. For travelers who want adventure, simplicity and harmony with nature, few travel destinations can compare with an eco-lodge stay in the Peruvian Amazon.
But what is an eco-lodge? An eco-lodge should be entirely nature-based and have a low environmental impact. Its business structure should be sustainable over time and designed to help protect sensitive neighboring areas. It should also benefit local communities, through new employment or economic opportunities.
And, importantly, it should offer tourists an interpretive and interactive participatory experience, by providing opportunities to commune with nature, as well as with local cultural practices. An eco-lodge should be planned, designed, constructed and operated in an environmentally and socially sensitive manner. Any truly authentic eco-lodge must encompass the core principles of all ecotourism initiatives: Nature should be protected and preserved; outreach programs should contribute to environmental education; the local community should benefit; and interpretive programs should be offered for both ecotourism activities and the educating of employees concerning the surrounding natural and cultural environment.
