Tambopata National Reserve: One of the most biologically diverse places on the planet

The two most accessible areas of virgin forest we have in Peru are Tambopata National Reserve and Manu National Park. But whereas accessing Manu involves a long journey from the city of Cusco, Tambopata National Reserve and the Ecolodge can be accessed via a short plane ride and fascinating boat trip from the erstwhile Inca capital.
The Ecolodge is set in primary rainforest habitat on the banks of the river which gives the National Reserve its name. All Ecolodge itineraries include river, lake and trail excursions in this protected pristine natural area.
The Tambopata National Reserve is known to be home to 632 species of birds, 1200 butterfly species, 103 amphibians, 180 kinds of fish, 103 reptiles and 169 different mammals. The reserve’s lake systems and forests provide the ideal habitat for several endangered species of Amazonian mammals, including giant river otters, pumas, jaguars and ocelots.
The primate species found within Tambopata National Reserve include spider monkeys, brown-mantled tamarins, emperor tamarins, howler monkeys, black-headed night monkeys, brown woolly monkeys, black-capped squirrel monkeys, common squirrel monkeys, white-fronted capuchins and tufted capuchins.
Other large mammal species found within the Tambopata National Reserve include the South American tapir, white-lipped peccary, collared peccary, red brocket deer, gray deer, and two-toed and three-toed sloths.
While our experienced guides know where to look for Amazon fauna, travelers planning to visit the National Reserve should remember that the longer they spend in the rainforest the more likely they are to see its unique wildlife. Peru’s Amazon region does not possess the savannah habitat seen on African safaris; during guided excursions in the forests of the Amazon basin the aim is to search patiently for wildlife on forest trails, lakes and rivers. Our four- and five-day programs enable visitors to spend as much time as possible in the forest, particularly during those itineraries with riverside camping excursions. And for those with just two nights to spend in the rainforest as part of their vacation in Peru, the Ecolodge offers a shorter primary forest habitat itinerary.
